The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group uses donated funds to provide communication support for community programs and hosts various community engagement opportunities within Acres Homes.

The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that specializes in connecting community residents and stakeholders to resources and events within the Acres Homes Community (EIN: 88-1898938). The mission of the organization is to enhance neighborhood participation by galvanizing residents, supporting civic associations and leveraging community partnerships to address the immediate needs of the community.

The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group is committed to training up the next generation of leaders through hands-on grassroots organizing and mentorship. We create an, "On-Ramp to Advocacy" by offering several leadership development opportunities to help residents of all ages build their confidence and become more involved in their communities.

Resident Leadership Institute

Description:

The Resident Leadership Institute is a 7-week program designed to help community members take the first step in advocating for their community through basic public speaking and storytelling, civic engagement, neighborhood mobilization, and planning movements in their neighborhood.

 

The AHCAG would provide 7 participants a chance to develop their voice, learn how to navigate specific levels of government, understand how to identify resources and partners, and end with a "Capstone" community project that inspires them to take the first step in being the change they want to see in their community. Graduates will also receive a $250 stipend to support any community initiative they would like to start.

Time Frame: 1-year commitment

Location: Virtual

Requirements:

  • Must be16 years or older

  • Have reliable transportation

  • Live in your neighborhood for at least six months

  • Must attend at least five (5) of the classes. Attendance is defined as active engagement in the session (conversation in chat, answering questions, contributing to conversations during class)

  • Participate in two (2) canvassing initiatives (Dates will be shared during class)

  • Attend one (1) Acres Homes Super Neighborhood Meeting

  • Complete your Capstone/Community Project before the Institute deadline

Community Voices Fellowship (Invitation Only)

Description:

The Community Voice Fellowship Program is a year-long fellowship to ensure Acres Homes Residents directly shape health, environment, and civic engagement decisions that impact them - and grow a pipeline of informed, empowered community leaders. 

Time Frame: 1-year commitment

Job Type: Part-time, MUST be available to work weekends and evenings

Location: Acres Homes, Northwest Houston, Hybrid Model

Reports to: Executive Director

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Represent AHCAG at public meetings.

  • Lead neighborhood outreach

  • Provide testimony on health, housing, civic, and environmental policy

  • Host community conversations and listening sessions

  • Partner with researchers, developers, or policy groups as community reviewers

  • Lead rapid response mobilization during crises (public comment, disaster response/preparedness, etc.)

  • Coordinate and host Table Talk Series with themed conversation topics (Health and Wellness, Voter Education, Resident Priorities, etc)

 

Members of our CVF will have two routes to engage with: Engagement Ambassadors and Community Wellness Advocates

Community Wellness Advocates will have more specialized tasks, including:

  • Conducting Wellness Canvassing (interviewing residents about various barriers to overall wellness)

  • Micro Health Workshops

  • Coordinating Health and Heart wellness retreats for school teachers and churches

  • More suited for in-person engagement

 

Engagement Ambassadors will have more specialized tasks, including:

  • Supporting/Teaching Civics 101 classes in high schools

  • GOTV Canvassing

  • Coordinating/Supporting Mass Voter Registration and VDVR training

  • Can be altered for more Online Engagement

Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work weekends and evenings

  • A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation

  • Must have access to a cellphone or tablet with internet access

  • Ability to learn how to use MiniVan and Impactive

  • Attention to detail

  • Deeply passionate about civic engagement and activating residents to get involved in their community

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Enthusiasm for building meaningful relationships in the communities we're canvassing

  • Goal-oriented and self-disciplined; able to meet tight deadlines and multitask

  • Experience leading a team to hit goals consistently

  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, changing work environment

  • Team player

Compensation:

$250 stipend per month for 1 year

Field Canvasser

Description:

Field Canvasser Overview

The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group (AHCAG) is looking for dedicated and passionate Field Canvassers to join our team. As a Field Canvasser, you will play a vital role in empowering the Acres Homes and Northwest Houston community by engaging residents, providing reliable information, and supporting our Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts. This position requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to civic engagement.

Time Frame: May - November 15

Job Type: Part-time, MUST Be available to work weekends and evenings

Location: Acres Homes, Northwest Houston, Hybrid Model

Reports to: Field Manager

  • Work with a team of AHCAG canvassers to meet goals and GOTV for The Acres Homes and Northwest Houston community

  • Complete door-to-door canvassing shifts on weekends, which includes some evenings (Saturdays & Sunday)

  • Complete accurate and timely data entry

  • Provide reliable and trustworthy information to individuals while canvassing

  • Submit data and shift reports on time

  • Work some AHCAG community events

Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work weekends (Saturdays & Sundays)

  • A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation

  • Must have access to a cellphone, or tablet with internet access
