Mapping and Addressing Mental Health Deserts: An Open Data and Community Engagement Approach in Houston, TX

Mental health disparities disproportionately impact economically disadvantaged communities, particularly communities of color. This project seeks to analyze and address mental health deserts, areas with inadequate access to mental health services, within Houston’s Precinct 4.

Using an open scholarship approach, this study will create an openly accessible dataset and interactive map identifying underserved areas, engage the community through training and workshops, and advocate for targeted policy interventions. A core component of this project is building a culture of sharing, ensuring that the findings are not only accessible to researchers but also directly available and useful to community stakeholders and residents in affected zip codes.
