Wellness Advocacy (Healthy)
The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group is committed to promote health and wellness for all Acres Homes residents by engaging in ongoing dialogue about healthy behaviors and supporting various trainings and strategies. We also are committed to demystifying stigmas and myths around health topics, as well as promoting community resources and activities that directly impact cancer risk reduction.

The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group was awarded a Culture of Health Prize from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2023 that “honors the work of communities that are at the forefront of addressing structural racism and other structural injustices, to advance health, opportunity, and equity for all.”

The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group is supported to conduct community-based outreach and engagement activities within the Acres Homes area by Be Well™ Acres Homes and the Acres Homes Cancer Prevention Collaboration (CPC). Both initiatives aim to increase awareness and use of Acres Homes resources to improve the overall health of our neighbors.
Be Well Acres Homes is an initiative of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in collaboration with Harris Health System, Memorial Hermann Community Benefit Corporation, UT Health School of Public Health, and more than 30 community organizations united together with residents of Acres Homes.

Civic Engagement (Heard)
The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group is committed to empowering residents to remain civically engaged for their communities. We work with various coalitions like Grow The Circle, The BRIDGE Collective and many others to promote civic engagement through workshops and communal gatherings.

Civics 101 Workshop
We provide a civic engagement class to build future leaders. The purpose of the class is to provide participants with basic information about our municipal, county, state, and federal governments, their various roles in daily life, and how to civically engage with each level of government. The desired outcome will result in participants having a basic understanding of how each of these entities affect their daily lives, and how they can engage with each level to advocate for issues that are community-centered. Courses can be offered to high school juniors, seniors, and community groups.

Resident Leadership Institute
The Resident Leadership Institute is a six-session training series that equips 7 - 10 residents with practical skills in civic literacy, environmental and wellness advocacy, policy engagement, community organizing, and coalition building. The program creates a sustainable pipeline of leaders who can confidently represent neighborhood priorities, mobilize residents, and contribute meaningfully to public processes affecting community health and environmental conditions.

Community Voice Fellowship
The Community Voice Fellowship Program is a year-long fellowship to ensure Acres Homes Residents directly shape health, environment, and civic engagement decisions that impact them - and grow a pipeline of informed, empowered community leaders. Participants will have the option of choosing between two fields of focus: Community Wellness Advocates or the Engagement Ambassadors. Community Wellness Advocates will have more specialized tasks focusing on Wellness Advocacy and Engagement Ambassadors will have tasks centered on voter education, community mobilization, and grassroots organizing.

Acres Homes Community Kickback
Let's come together and celebrate our voice! Join us during National Voter Registration Week as we celebrate the power of our voice with an old-school block party! We provide you with a chance to show off your community pride, get registered to vote, and learn about free resources to help you make your trip to the polls successful. Join us every year as we rock the vote!
Housing
The Acres Homes Community Advocacy Group is actively seeking out opportunities to improve housing access in the neighborhood. We are looking for partners who are committed to maintaining the character of Acres Homes. Additionally, as part of our function as an information hub, we frequently distribute housing information and promote opportunities for community members to share their concerns about construction projects.
