Health and environmental risks and benefits of red/processed
meat consumption – a communication-centered exploratory
study

We invite Acres Homes residents to share their valuable opinions on red meat and its effects on personal
health and the planet. Your help will enhance our understanding to create practical ways to cut back on red
meat while promoting affordable, sustainable, and culturally relevant healthy eating options that improve
health for families and individuals.
Eligibility: To participate, you must be a resident of the Greater Houston area or a student at Lone Star
College, aged 18–40, able to read and write in English or Spanish, and have no doctor-recommended
special diets for pre-existing conditions.

Participants will receive a $40 USBank Visa gift card for their time completing one 40-45-minute one-to-
one interview via Zoom and a 3-minute survey at the end of the survey. To participate or learn more, email

Family Survivors of Black Maternal Mortality: Lift Your Voices

Black maternal mortality remains a serious crisis in this country. When a Black mother dies from pregnancy-related causes, her family and community are left with profound grief and long-term impact. This study seeks to center and honor the voices of those family members, so we can better understand their experiences and advocate for changes in care and support.

Participants will receive a $25 Amazon Gift Card

Inclusion Criteria:

• Must be a family survivor of a Black woman who suffered a pregnancy-
related death in the U.S within 1 year of giving birth. (husband, partner,

mother, father, child, cousin, niece, next-of-kin, grandparents, in-laws).
• Must have experienced the pregnancy, or delivery, or post-partum periods

or any combination of these events with a family member who self-
identified as a Black woman and suffered a pregnancy-related death in

the U.S.
• Must be willing to participate in a 60-minute interview conducted either
face-to-face or via Zoom videoconferencing to share their experience of
losing their family member to a pregnancy-related death.
• Must be willing to participate in a 30-minute follow-up meeting via
telephone to review the transcript.
• Must be able to read, speak and write in the English language.
• Must have access to phone, email, and internet.
• Must be 18 years or older.

Active Living After Cancer

We are looking for English and Spanish speaking cancer survivors in the Acres Homes neighborhood looking to increase their physical activity and receive support from other members of their community. Our free 12-week class will help you reach your goals in physical activity and help you learn to navigate through you cancer survivorship with a support system to cheer you on! To participate, you must be connected to Acres Homes, 18 years of age or older, and have a previous cancer diagnosis. The ALAC team will be recruiting for rolling classes till December 2028. Participants will receive up to $150 in compensation for attending assessments and class. Participants will also receive a free Fitbit and other ALAC goodies. Outdoor 44

We invite Acres Homes residents to share their opinions about neighborhood safety and outdoor physical activity by taking part in MD Anderson’s Outdoor 44 study. Your participation will help us learn whether safety concerns keep community members from going outside to get exercise.

Participation involves completing an online survey. Some participants may be invited to complete a follow-up survey or interview. Participants will receive a Walmart gift card for taking part in the study. To participate, you must be a current resident of Acres Homes for 2+ years, 18 years of age or older, and able to read and write in English or Spanish.

We are enrolling participants through October 31, 2025. Those interested in participating should complete this brief screening form so that we can determine your eligibility. (Link to screener)
